About Pasig

PASIG CITY MAP

PASIG CITY is approximately 12 kilometers east of Manila, on the southern tip of Pasig River. It is bordered by Quezon City and Marikina City on the North, Mandaluyong City on the West, the province of Rizal on the East and Makati City, Taguig City and municipality of Pateros on the South.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATIONS
For a reluctant tourist, the optimal way of going about the city may be hopping into a cab and allowing it to take you on a perfunctory tour. On the other hand, going by any of the public transports available affords you a full experience of Pasig City, teeming with culture and heritage.
On EDSA, you can either take the bus – both northbound and southbound buses stop in front of Robinson’s Galleria, a perfect place to start – or the Metro Rail Transit. The MRT stops at the Ortigas Station from which Robinson’s Galleria is but a leisurely stroll. From Galleria, navigating the rest of Ortigas Center’s “jewel” streets on foot is best.
The quintessentially Filipino ride known as the “jeepney” goes the Pasig-Quiapo (and vice versa) route, which has existed for decades, and travels from the western side of Shaw Boulevard. The modern and cooler spin-off of the jeepney – the “FX” - is available at a terminal on the north side of Robinson’s Galleria.

PASIG CITY LANDMARKS

MERALCO

Built before the development of the Ortigas Center in the ‘60s, the Meralco building is an enduring witness to the rise of recent regimes, because of its proximity to the Edsa Shrine, which has become the venue for many a political movement. It houses the main office of the Manila Electric Company and always features a unique display at Christmastime.

ULTRA

The University of Life Theater and Recreational Arena, now known as the Philippine Sports Arena is managed by the Department of Education, and has seen countless sports events as well as local and international concerts. Established in 1975, its facilities such as the oval and the swimming pool remain the favored training ground for most local athletes.

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHEDRAL

This 16th century church had weathered revolutions and earthquakes, until August 1968, when an earthquake left severe damage upon the church, silencing its bells and halting its clock. The church was reconstructed in 1980, the tower of bells and the clock amply restored. October 2003 marked a milestone in the church’s history when it was converted to a cathedral. The church might have been plundered of its treasures during the war but its historical significance is undiminished.

MUTYA NG PASIG PUBLIC MARKET

Possibly the largest in the country, this public market spans three storeys and 19,475 square meters of floor area. There are approximately 2, 447 fixed stalls, plus some 2, 967 stalls utilized as tiangge (flea market) on weekends. The public market is complimented by a four-storey parking building, complete with a terminal for tricycles on the ground floor, perfect for the throngs of shoppers, even from adjacent cities.

TEKTITE TOWERS

Built in 1993 for the Unified Philippine Stock Exchange, this 34-storey twin towers augured the rise of equally marvelous structures in the Central Business District. The topmost levels offer an arresting vista of the rest of Ortigas Center, but if the prospect is a little too lofty (literally) for you, have a cup of coffee among the business types at the lobby, instead.

PASIG HISTORICAL AND TOURIST SPOTS

BAHAY NA TISA
This is the oldest bahay na bato in existence in Pasig. It was built by Don Cecilio Tech y Cabrera in the early 1850s. It has been home to seven generations of the Tech family and has been witness to significant historical events in Pasig and in the country. The direct descendants of Don Cecilio are still in residence.
During Martial Law, it was called Freedom House because both factions of the political spectrum can use the house as a venue for their meetings. It was also at one time the unofficial San Jose Barangay Headquarters at one time. Art exhibits were also held here. On the other hand, the Bahay na Tisa is also home to the Santo Nino de Pasion. More so, every Sunday after Easter, the sick people of the town gathered inside the house to receive the Holy Communion and the benediction of the Parish Priest (Viatico Publico).
The Bahay na Tisa has huge blocks of adobe for the ground floor walls which served to carry the load of the hardwood floorings of the second floor. The roof was originally tisa but was destroyed during World War II and was replaced with corrugated asbestos roof. The windows were made of capiz shells. Due to its antiquity and unique character as a bahay na bato in the urban setting, the Bahay na Tisa has been a favorite venue for many movies and TV serial – one of the most notable being the Centennial Offering on the National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
In view of these facts, the City of Pasig has conferred the Bahay na Tisa the Dangal ng Pasig Award for Culture on the 30th day of June 2009.

BITUKANG MANOK
The waterway of Bitukang Manok is serpentine like and was a principal part of the Pasig River. The Spaniards named the river as “Rio de Pasig,” however, the people continued to refer to it among themselves as Bitukang Manok. The first sketch of Bitukang Manok or Pasig River became known as the Pariancillo River where its bank flourished as the public market up to 1970’s. Likewise, the Bitukang Manok contributed immensely to the economic prosperity of Pasig since time immemorial, by irrigating its rice plains.
The Bitukang Manok links the Pasig River with the Antipolo River. During the 17th up to the early 20th century, many pilgrims from Manila and nearby towns took the route of Bitukang Manok to the Shrine in Antipolo. Even the image of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage passed this way back and forth eleven times. In the 18th century, the Gremio de Mestizos de Sangley or Chinese Mestizos built a concrete covered bridge in the style of a pagoda over this waterway. It was called Pariancillo Bridge and later, Fray Felix Trillo Bridge in honor of Pasig’s dynamic pastor.
The Katipunan led by Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo also held part of the Asamblea Magna aboard seventeen bancas on this river in the first week of May 1896. The post war period saw the drastic decline of the Bitukang Manok. It also succumbed to environmental pollution due to population growth.
The worst came to the Bitukang Manok River in the late 1960’s when the ailing river, instead of being revived was buried under the ground to give way to commercial establishments.
This picture was taken circal 1899. Its two sides is now developed as a promenade for those who wish to walk along the 3.6kms length that starts infront of McDonald and end at Asahi Glass in Pinagbuhatan.

CUARTEL DEL GUARDIA CIVIL (Guanio Residence)
This was built in 1881 by Don Apolonio Santiago y Domingo, gobernadorcillo of Pasig. In 1894, it was transformed into the Cuartel del Guardia Civil. During the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in 1896, suspected Katipuneros were imprisoned, tortured and died here.
After the Filipino-American War, it was acquired by Doña Clara Tambunting de Oliveros and in 1922 by En gineer and Mrs. Domingo Guanio.

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHEDRAL (ICC)
This is the first Marian Parish in the Philippines. The Augustinian Missionaries founded it in 1572. The original patroness of the church was the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (1573) whose feast falls on 2 July. The title of Immaculate Conception was only recognized on 25 April 1587.
The present stone church of the archdiocese was built between the years 1722 to 1760. – Rating as the oldest edifice in Pasig. Here, the Second Philippine Commission met in 5 June 1901 to discuss the organization of a civil government; thus, creating through the enactment of the Philippine Commission Act No. 137 the Province of Rizal with Pasig as its capital. In 28 October 1992, a new Immaculate Conception of Pasig with renovated altars and marble floor was blessed by Jaime Cardinal Sin, the same date the old altar was blessed. In October 2003 came a milestone in the church history when the church was converted into a cathedral with father Francisco San Diego as the first bishop.
The ICC has its own Diocesan Museum located in its convent. It houses different church artifacts such as the dresses of the Immaculate Conception, the remnants of the original bell tower clock, candelabras and others.

DIMAS-ALANG BAKERY
This is the first known bakery in Pasig which was put up in the year 1919 by Ambrosio Lozada – the father of the internationally known violinist Carmencita Lozada. The fact that it shared a pen name with national hero Dr. Jose Rizal all the more establishes its significance in the days when Pasig was starting to carve a name in entrepreneurship.
Kapasigan then, where Dimas-Alang Bakery is located, was composed of Sta. Elena, San Isidro and Wawa, the sitios by the river edge. During that time, there was nothing as enticing as the sweet scent of bread wafting all over this “baybay ng ilog”, coaxing townsfolk to pause from what they’re doing and partake of the town’s ever favorite snack: the pandesal.
In the succeeding years, Dimas-Alang would introduce baked goods inspired by foreign palates – the croissant and French breads, for example. But the Pasig folks remained loyal to the pandesal. Other favorites that saw brisk sale were the aglipay, the bonete, biscocho de cana and the “di ko akalain”.

MAYBUNGA San Antonio Abad Church
In January 1572, the Augustinians led by Fr. Alonzo de Alvarado sailed down the Pasig River with the encomendero Juan de la Isla. They reached Maybunga on January 17, the feast of San Antonio Abad, placing him as its titular. Maybunga was then an independent community with its own group of lakans and maginoos. It is likely that this community was the settlement established by Dayang Kalangitan and Gat Lontok, centuries before the Spanish arrived. – Three days later, the Spaniards moved on from Maybunga to the center of ancient Pasig at Pinagbuhatan.
A distinct feature of the community is the centuries-old chapel which the Spanish missionaries, with the help of the natives of the community, built. In it is enshrined the community’s patron saint, San Antonio Abad. The patron saint is believed to help the residents in many ways, such as in bringing about a good rice harvest, progress and prosperity.

PASIG CITY MUSEUM
The Pasig City Museum, formerly known as the Concepcion Mansion, is located at one end of the Plaza Rizal in barangay San Jose. It was built in 1937 by Don Fortunato Concepcion, a successful business tycoon and the former mayor of Pasig (1918-1921). During World War II, the Japanese used it as their headquarters and detention center. On 19 February 1945, the American flag was hoisted atop the tower of this mansion, symbolizing the end of the Japanese occupation of Pasig – the Liberation Day of Pasig.
The Concepcion Mansion was acquired by the City of Pasig in 1980 from the heirs of Dr. Jose Concepcion, a son of Don Fortunato. For two decades, it housed the Pasig Library and Museum. In October 2000 the building was renovated; and in 2001, it was fully devoted to museum use. This marked the beginning of the thrust of the city of Pasig in the promotion of its arts, culture, and history.
In February 2008 the museum had undergone major rehabilitation and restoration works. This picture was shot after its renovation. The picture was already edited to eliminate the wires that cross the building. Then in June 6, 2008, it opened with a world class presentation of the city’s history and heritage. Today, it is one of the best local historical museums housing a Timeline History of Pasig, Comparative Sites and Landmarks Photo Exhibit, Natural Science Hall and some of the original furniture of the mansion among others.
Today, the Pasig City Museum is not merely history preserved in stands and display cases but an effective tool of the Local Government of Pasig in the promotion of arts, history and culture as well as tourism for the city.

PINAGBUHATAN SAN SEBASTIAN CHURCH
The Augustinians led by Fr. Alonzo de Alvarado and encomendero Juan de la Isla reached the ancient barrio through the riverside on 20 January 1572. The first Mass was celebrated on the same date honoring the feast of San Sebastian, which they adopted as their patron. This is the area where the Spaniards first established their parish and cabecera. The town was simply called Pasig or “San Sebastian de Pasig.”
After about a year in Pasig, de la Isla and the friars apparently realized that the ancient town center was not the ideal site wherein to build permanent edifices of Church and State. It gets flooded during the rainy season thus they moved their center to Malinao – the site of the present Immaculate Conception Cathedral. It was only at this point that the old town center became known as Pinagbuhatan. Thereafter, the Pinagbuhatan chapel became one of the parish’s visitas.
From a small chapel, a bigger church was built in Pinagbuhatan. It was inaugurated on 6 May 1990 by His Eminence Jaime Cardinal Sin, Archbishop of Manila. In 31 May 1990, a decree was signed creating San Sebastian Church as a Parish of the Diocese of Pasig. Likewise in 12 June 1990, Rev. Fr. David Colong was solemnly installed as its first parish priest.

RIZAL BOY SCOUT COUNCIL HEADQUARTERS
Don Fortunato Concepcion donated the land and building of the Rizal Council Boy Scouts Headquarter. This edifice provided the prestige of the Rizal Province as the first class council and signaled a great stride in the advancement of the Scouting movement. This building was constructed in January 1949 and was completed and made ready for occupancy in one and a half month’s time.
Conferences, inductions, trainings and other activities were held in the Rizal Boy Scout Council Headquarters. There were also major decisions discussed, decided, approved and implemented within its Conference Hall. It really played an important role in the development of Scouting in Pasig.
Even the first joint exhibit of the Historical Research Club (originally Pitong Matanda sa Pasig) and the Pasig Art Club was held here in 1957. Aside from scouting, the site also became a venue for cultural, historical and artistic events up to the 1970’s.

TRIBUNALll DE MESTIZOS
The old building of the Gremio de Mestizos was located in one corner of the Plaza Rizal. It became the Municipal Hall in 1959. Today, it no longer exists except in photographs and oil paintings.
The Tribunal de Mestizos or the Gremio de Mestizos was established after the Spaniards organized the Chinese population of Pasig in 1741. The tribunal is for those of mixed Spanish or Chinese ancestry. It functioned as a municipal government which performed legislative and judicial functions restricted only to members.

PASIG DINING
EL PUEBLO
RACKS
Racks has been a tradition in barbecued ribs since mid-1990s, but in recent years has served a menu that evokes images of a Southern American Sunday brunch. Generously cut steaks, baked beans, mac and cheese, and country-style fried chicken have been top-billing alongside the classic and baby-back ribs. Of course, no Sunday brunch is ever complete without dessert so dig into a Mississippi mud pie or an apple pie for a sweet finish.

CONGO GRILL
Although set to look like the wilds of Africa, Congo’s menu stays close to home. The grilled squid is tender and succulent, the tuna belly is divine and the paella negra (rice flavored with squid ink and spices) gratifying, though not quite what you would order on a date. Getting to the door requires a considerable climb, but think of it as their way of building up your appetite. You should have a big one to still accommodate a congo mango or a fresh fruit platter of refreshing watermelons, pineapples and others in season.

PASTO

Decidedly classic Italian, Pasto is Like an acquaintance with Food Network chef, Mario Batali’s brand of Italian cuisine. The pasta selection is imaginative but not pretentious, the stone-baked thin-crust pizzas are heavenly, and the paninis are just scrumptious. The room is low-lit and comfortably furnished, and the tables are always set with a bottle of wine, lending an almost opulent feel that does not reflect on your tab at the end of the meal.

METROWALK

BACOLOD CHICKEN INASAL
This restaurant declares itself the domain of chicken inasal(Bacolod's chicken barbecue, marinated in native herbs and spices and grilled on a stick). Hold your appetite just a tad...try their Pangpagana (appetizer) of chikynineeswhich are bits of crispy chicken skin served with a vinegar-and-garlic dip. Its hearty soup selection that includes batchoy (local noodle soup in tasty beef broth with slices of meat and chopped pork cracklings) more than justifies this humble home of comfort food.

BRAZIL! BRAZIL!
Their churrascos (Brazilian barbecue) will keep you yearning for their unique flavor. There are 15 kinds, all marinated in a secret recipe that blends sweet and spicy, left to cure for three days and cooked to sublime tenderness over lava rocks. Choose a beef hanging tender or a beef brisket, or the weekend special, leg of lamb, to go with a caipirinha(Brazilian drink of rhum, diced lemons and brown sugar), or a caipiroska, which is Brazil's version of rhum-coke.

ICEBERG'S
Iceberg’s has been popular with the young crowd for over a decade, being the place for sundaes, cobblers and parfaits, as well as local cooler, halu-halo (literally meaning “mix-mix” in Filipino), a concoction of sugar palm or coconut gel, purple yam preserve, sago, jackfruit, toasted rice crisps, egg yolk custard, ice cream, evaporated milk and sugar, topped with crushed ice. As if that were not enough treat, they have other items on their expanded menu, such as sandwiches, even tenderloin beef with mushroom and chicken cordon bleu.

MENU
Theirs is one that offers a myriad of flavors. Rice, alone, comes in exotic varieties such as turmeric, coconut, and beryani(a mix of garlic and chili). The friendly waitstaff are quick to suggest the mississippi fillet in spicy anchovy and pumpkin sauce, or the fillet mignon wrapped in bacon and complemented with either gravy or béchamel sauce. There’s also an extensive selection of coffees and cocktails to cap off the evening with.

MISATO

“ Irrashaimase” (“welcome” in Japanese) signals your exciting journey through Japanese cuisine, quite unlike many. There are all the usual fare such as sashimi and tempura, but rather than aspire for Japanese authenticity, their menu entices with a flavor that is more local. The crazy maki packs a multitude of flavors and textures with its crispy tempura batter flakes, crab meat and ebiko(shrimp eggs), thus appealing to the Filipinos’ love for salty-sweet combinations.Misato pr ides itself in its philosophy that every diner is a VIP, so even before you raise a hand to order dessert, more likely a waitstaff has a suggestion ready. So how about that tempura ice cream?

SOUTH SEA GRILL

This is a place that has become exceedingly popular for seafood that is utterly fresh, and for a gustatory adventure into General Santos City’s cuisine. The seafood platter comes highly recommended as a sampler of the city’s famed fresh harvests of prawns, squid, white marlin and mussels. You can also opt for the grilled diana which is a delectable cross between the salmon and the tuna. South Sea Grill gathers an enthusiastic crowd during lunch and dinner, and you just might catch world boxing champ, Manny Pacquiao in off-training season.

OPUS
This intimate restaurant and bar belies the massive flavors bursting from their unique menu. The appetizer balut (duck eggs) and prawns in oyster sauce and chili butter reduction is delectable, but who’s to blame you for delving into their ultra-tender corned beef steak, or their kare-kare (ox tail stewed in peanut sauce), the recipe for which has been handed down through generations?
The casual dinner ambience breaks into a spirited party mood when the music starts picking up around 10 P.M. That is just about the perfect time to grab a “mood swing, “ a stealthy drink that matches every mood – depressed, in love, ecstatic and cool. “Seven shots” is not for the callow ones.

DEPOT AREA

NEXT DOOR

The food is just as good as on the menu of its mother restaurant, North Park, but if you seek a distinctive experience in this less expensive spin-off, try the amoylumpia (spring roll of vegetables, ground pork, dried seaweed and peanuts, or the curried beef tendon served with rice or canton noodles. Lychee panna cotta is a popular choice for a sweet ending to a full, filling meal.

SEASIDE SEAFOOD MARKET
Here is a bustling scene of fresh oysters, prawns, lobsters, crabs, even fish you cannot think of names for. All you have to do is make your choice as to which particularly beckons to your craving, and have it cooked by one of several stalls offering the Ituromo, Ilutoko(“You point, I cook”, in Filipino) service. This is one gastronomical excursion not to miss.

PEARL DRIVE
HOTSHOTS
One can simply park, grab a burger and drink, and drive off after a few minutes…or stay and take in the scene of students streaming from the University of Asia and the Pacific right across. Either way, the experience of another flavorful, albeit a bit playful, innovation on the beloved sandwich is incomparable.

MARINA

This place easily transports you to the all-too-captivating marina of Iloilo City with its selection of fresh seafood and grilled specialties. This particular branch of the restaurant is a little inauspiciously located, but the luscious and affordable offerings more than compensate for this deficiency.

FRONTERA VERDE
GERRY'S GRILL

A phenomenal hit when it opened in the late ‘90s, Dencio’s has since shown no restraint pleasing its loyal clientele. The sisigis just as excellent, the bulalo(beef marrow soup) wonderfully rich, and the crispy tadyang (ribs) addictive. This bilevel place has become as much an after-work hangout for a round of ice-cold beer, or two (Bucket promos are always available for groups!), to go with their appetizers, as much as a family destination for lunch or dinner.

RED KIMONO

Red Kimono eschews traditional Japanese for a more contemporary décor, a preference that is also reflected on their menu. The crabstick rolls with wasabi mayo are a perfect indication of a pleasantly unconventional meal ahead. The layered spinach and tofu woos the palate with its tender texture and wins you over with its sweet miso sauce. It’s only one of delightful choices on its vegetarian menu; the tofu steak laced with apple sauce is yet another. For those who are not on a stringent diet, try the kamameshi rice which is cooked tender and flavorful with chicken or beef. Or you can sample a whole range of appetizers, entrees and desserts for only P485 (plus 10% service charge). The choices can be giddying, with sushi, teriyaki grilled chicken, beef or pork tonkatsu, among others. Desserts are not disappointing either; try the chocolate balls, rich chocolate-and-coconut with a gooey strawberry core.

LIFE COFFEE AND TEA
It’s not the lone restaurant inside SM Hypermarket, but this franchise from Taiwan is a great place to get a snack after searching the aisles at the supermarket and working up an appetite. Have a plate of nachos which are light and crispy, or a garlic shrimp pizza. The teas are wonderfully refreshing – you can choose green pr red – all with extracts from fruits such as mango, lychee, peach and strawberry. You can also order a full meal if their selection of salads, pastas and entrees dictate that you do so. Surely your satiated selves cannot handle a quick departure, so linger a while with a nice cup of latte, a bold espresso or a luscious frappe.

PASIG SITES-SEEING

HISTORICAL SITES
BAHAY NA TISA (HOUSE OF BRICKS)

This oldest house in Pasig built by Don Cecilio Tech in 1846 has remained the home of the family over generations. One of his descendants, Dean Carlos Tech, was a noted historian who devoted hours of writing in his cozy study just above the grand staircase. After he passed away in 2001, all of the distinguished educator’s books, including original Spanish volumes, are still displayed on shelves and tables, almost as he had left them. These days, with its Spanish architecture, the house is a much-preferred shooting location for film and television.

PLAZA DE RIZAL
Located just across the first city hall of Pasig, Plaza Rizal stands in honor of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. The plaza is also in the middle of a number of other historical sites in the area, among them, the Pasig Cathedral, the Pasig City Museum and Bahayna Tisa (House of Bricks).

ANDRESS BONIFACIO MONUMENT
A cenotaph originally constructed in 1932, this monument pays tribute to the courage and leadership of the great Katipunero. Bonifacio headed the KatipunanAssemblea Magna, which launched the revolution known among local historians as Nagsabado.

BAHAY KUWAGO
This venue for clandestine meetings of the Katipuneroswas a hollow among thickets where ULTRA’s amphitheater now lies. It is interesting to find a trace of history where modern edifices such as a sports complex and an international school have risen.

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CATHEDRAL
In 1587, the Immaculate Conception became the patroness of the Augustinian convent in Pasig. This cathedral held various treasures, among them the “Retablo,” which depicted an almost tropical motif, with palm trees and wells, and included the basic structure of the old church of Pasig – the dome and the tower – formerly known as “Solomon’s Temple.” It was during the celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception in 1941 that former Mayor CiprianoRaymundo halted the procession to announce the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

PASIG CITY MUSEUM
This museum and art center houses the city’s historical and art treasures. Built in 1937, it was formerly known as the Concepcion Mansion, which was also a Japanese headquarters and detention house during the war. On February 19, 1945, the American flag was raised on the balcony to signal the end of Japanese occupation in Pasig. In the early 1980s, the mansion was acquired by the city government to accommodate the Pasig City Library and Museum. After its initial renovation in 2001, the museum became its sole occupant, as the Pasig Library moved to another location. The Museum has only recently undergone a second renovation as part of the administration’s objective of upholding the city’s historical and artistic legacy.

GARDENS, PARKS AND OTHER RECREATIONAL DESTINATIONS

RAIN FOREST PARK
Also known as Pasig Central Park, this expanse of nature in Barangay Maybunga is an oasis from the city’s hustle and bustle. It includes a butterfly garden, a swimming pool, a pavilion, basketball and tennis courts, a fitness gym, a Senior Citizens Park and a Youth Training Center where leadership training seminars are held. The entirety of the park can be quite a walk, but try the train for a quick trip along its main features.

FUN RANCH
This mini-theme park indulges a kid’s fancies with its hit rides such as the bumper boat and the tic-tac ride. Any little girl becoming a princess is a cinch at the first ever in the world, Pink Salon by Barbie, where she can get a makeover including a Diva Hairstyle, glimmer tattoo and nail art. Kids can also discover their inner chefs at Marta’s Cakes, where they can create their own masterpiece of a cupcake. And when energy is running low from all the fun things to do, kids can always make a brief stop at the Big Red Barn Resto, or recharge at the Little Lambs Spa.

ARK AVILON ZOO
The original zoo is farther East in Montalban, Rizal, but this 2,000-square-meter urban safari is just as delightful. Barely six months since it opened, Ark Avilon is already drawing hordes of kids and adults alike, eager to see a giant tortoise, a tiger, a lion and a jaguar up close. There are also less aggressive animals that kids can still have tons of fun watching, such as a python, an orangutan and the ever friendly and playful rabbits

ORTIGAS CENTER
The hub of business in the city, Ortigas Center is a concentration of media networks and call centers. Since the late 1980s, radio stations have been airing atop such buildings as STRATA 100, STRATA 2000 (formerly Strata 200), and, of late, the Jollibee Plaza. The most prominent call centers have also flocked to the area since the late 1990s.

PASIG NIGHTLIFE

METROWALK
PHI METRO BAR
If you see stylish types sauntering from the pavement of the corner coffeeshop on Metrowalk, more likely they’re headed for Phi. This hybrid of a bar and lounge is comfortable most days; you can cozy up to the bar to get your own drink. Weekends are a scene a bit different, though, as the room can get cramped with the city’s party denizens. The sign is conspicuous from Meralco Avenue, so if you happen to be cruising by on your quest for a fab night out, Phi offers awesome possibilites.

ARUBA
This bar that derives inspiration from the Carribean Island seduces you into heading for your own island escape. The “carribean cruise” begins to take you away with a mix of rhum, pineapple juice and cranberry juice, but “kokomo” gets you there with its concoction of coconut rhum, orange juice, mango juice and lychee syrup. They also serve some exotic appetizers: the zult(pork ears, deep-fried and chopped) is worth a try, so is the pastechis, which is ground pork in pastry and served with a rich white sauce.

DECADES
Notable for its tenure in the bar and club scene, Decades continues to attract a mix of college-age and after-work crowds. The music ranges from ambient to hip-hop on weekends, when it can sometimes get a bit raucous. Still, the bar has remained comfy and appealing, and if it doesn’t meet all your expectations, you can happily nibble on some fantastic finger food and cool down with a cocktail or beer.

ELBOW ROOM
Initially conceived for yuppies whose formula for de-stressing is a game of pool and beer, Elbow Room has already charged up the package with live music. Here, your sartorial preferences are of no value; a man’s rolled up office-shirt sleeves are more the norm than an aberration.

DEPOT AREA
PIER ONE
This simulation of an enormous yacht feels like partying at the beach sans the waves and sand. The setting has earned substantial merit, and so has its perpetual beer-by- the-bucket promo. Pier One lives up to its concept of a vessel at the dock, being a venue that is committed to just go with the flow. The scene here can be mellow to pulsating.

TIANANMEN
This is what Next Door restaurant converts to after 9 P.M. The bar evidently does not shed off its Chinese bearings then, but the ambience is universally appealing. Tiananmen is where and how you discover Chinese accompaniments to beer such as wanton nachos and taro puff. At the end of the evening, the hot congee can liberate you from a drunken stupor before driving home.

FRONTERA VERDE
ALCHEMY
This trilevel club has got club-hoppers dizzy with excitement from the resurgence of hip in the city’s scene. Boasting of 900 square meters of party area, Alchemy combines lounge and club in one mammoth, uber-trendy destination. The second level attracts a well-heeled crowd that prefers to laze on plush seating and just soak up the vibe, while the third level is committed to serious dancing. The DJ’s decks showcase local and international talents who spin hip-hop, funky house and trance. Alchemy is where the fashionable and discriminating converge, but no worries of the place getting too hot for comfort. The club has a nitrous system that keeps clubbers cool rather than dripping.

SILVER CITY
The al fresco area of the mall that is lined with restaurants, bars and a coffeeshop becomes stage to some of today’s more distinguished solo acts and bands beginning 9 P.M. Silver City maintains a robust crowd that enjoys being in shirts and flip-flops alongside those in jackets and heels. The likelihood of running out of options for a drink is nil; you only have to think of how much you can handle.

TIENDESITAS
The shopping mega-complex that rivals the major shopping venues in Bangkok transforms into a music venue at 9 P.M. There is little distinction between the scene here and at Silver City, but at least shoppers here can spend the entire day scouring the shelves and racks, and still look forward to staying till the evening.

The staff makes you feel instantly welcome as you enter this understatedly elegant hotel. Discovery Suites makes sure that your stay is pleasurable through and through. Each suite is provided a Guest Interactive System that includes On-Demand Movies, a mini-component system and cable programming. The complimentary daily breakfast is a perfect way to start the day, while a dip in the Jacuzzi does not fail to soothe your stress away at the end of the day.

HOLIDAY INN
Another world-class hotel in the Robinson’s Galleria complex is Holiday Inn Manila Galleria Suites. Their splendidly comfortable deluxe rooms have earned the hotel a strong preference by local, as well as foreign travelling executives. Guests are lavished the amenities that you crave for away from home: television with cable programming, daily complimentary breakfast and a mini-bar.

LINDEN SUITES
This hotel of the Swiss-Belhotel Group is located along San Miguel Avenue, one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, thus attracting a clientele of business travelers. The Linden Suites combines serviced residences, hotel guest rooms, conference rooms and premiere office suites. It’s only a leisurely walk away from the Asian Development Bank, Philippine Stock Exchange Center and other top multinational companies. The rooms and suites are stylish and luxuriously furnished; the discerning traveler will find his stay more than satisfactory.

RICHMONDE HOTEL
Richmonde Hotel redefines the standards for accommodations with each magnificent room and suite. Guests revel in first class amenities including a business center that provides professional secretarial assistance for the travelling executive, as well as a health club that includes a steam bath and a heated pool. The banquet rooms are outfitted with supreme audio-visual facilities and broadband internet service, making it an excellent venue for conferences and cocktail receptions.

MOTORIST HOTELS AND INNS
Pasig City plays host to suburban commuters through the various motorist hotels and inns along Shaw Boulevard and Canley Road. Victoria Court and the Flower Group of motels - Rosal, Orchids, Dahlia and Daisy are among the most popular. The rooms are generally decent and austere, the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are clean – some of them commodious enough to have a tub that can lure you into a warm and relaxing soak. Guests also enjoy the convenience of round-the-clock room service. Best of all, they wake up invigorated, a feat that is virtually impossible these days if they had to battle the traffic South of the metro.

PASIG FESTIVITIES

Cultural celebrations abound in Pasig City, suffused with color and revelry. Visit the city at any time of the year for a culturally enriching and spiritually edifying experience, participating in any one of the following festivals:
BAMBINO FESTIVAL
This festival is celebrated in honor of the Sto. Nino, whose innocence, purity of spirit, and love have had a profound influence on the lives of Pasiguenos. An exhibit featuring the various images of the Blessed Child is mounted, culminating in a procession participated in by the different parishes and schools in the city.

ITIK-ITIK FESTIVAL
Held on the last Sunday of February that is the Feast of Barangay Kalawaan’s beloved patroness, St. Martha, this event highlights the barangay’s yield, the Itik ( a species of duck), hence the name of the festival.

ARAW NG PASIG
The most anticipated celebration of the year, Araw ng Pasig pays homage to the original patroness of Pasig, and its establishment as a parish in 1573. A motley of pop-cultural events occur simultaneously during the month-long affair, such as the Mutya ng Pasig pageant, the Outstanding Pasigueno Awards, and the street dance competition. The festivities culminate on July 2 that is, itself, the Feast of the Visitation of Our Lady.

BAYANIHAN FESTIVAL
The Bayanihan Festival depicts one of the Filipinos’ most extolled virtues: bayanihan (unity and cooperation). On the eve of Barangay Ugong’s fiesta that is held on the Sunday before the Feast of Christ the King in November, each purok or zone participates in a race of bahay-kubo (nipa hut). A muse sits atop each bahay-kubo, and cheers the crew on. The race commences at the barangay hall, stops at five strategically positioned stations to accomplish a challenge, and returns to the barangay hall for the finish.

PISTA NG PASIG
This is a church-sponsored celebration in honor of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8. The Parish Pastoral Council organizes events such as Marian concerts and novenario processions which draw an enormous following, as the Immaculate Conception Cathedral was the first Marian parish in the Philippines.

PASKOTITAP
The first ever grand Christmas float parade, Paskotitap features a number of themed floats, all marvelously designed and crafted by some of the country’s most acclaimed artists. Each float is accompanied by a group of dancers in accoutrements consistent with the float’s theme. This event is a definite treat to children and adults alike, who behold the entire spectacle through the dance competition that features choreographed performances by the participating dance groups.

PAKALOG FESTIVAL
On New Year’s Eve, residents of Barangay Santolan gather on Evengelista Street to share a sumptuous New Year’s Eve feast, the centerpiece of which is the most revered of all Filipino food, the lechon (roast suckling pig). This festival has fostered cooperation between the barangay officials and the residents from years of mounting the event.
